Enabling a scalable energy transition 

The MAN B&W ME-LGIM is a two-stroke, dual-fuel engine that can run on methanol as well as conventional fuels.

The engine provides an efficient, proven, and reliable solution, and plays an important role in the decarbonization of the maritime industry. Simple handling, storage, and bunkering of methanol, combined with relatively simple auxiliary systems and the potential to be carbon-neutral, makes it an attractive option for meeting decarbonization targets.

Proven two-stroke methanol engine design

Available for newbuilds or for upgrading existing conventional fuel vessels, the engine represents a proven and refined engine design based on more than 120,000 running hours on methanol alone.

When fuelled by methanol, the MAN B&W ME-LGIM engine significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, particles, and SOx emissions. Methanol produced from renewable sources can provide carbon-neutral propulsion.

LGIM EnginesThanks to an extensive existing ME-LGIM engine portfolio, our methanol solution caters to a wide range of vessel applications, including container vessels of all sizes, product tankers, VLCCs, numerous bulk carrier sizes, RoRos, and PCTCs.

Scalable energy transition

LGIM ShippingThe major appeal of methanol as an alternative fuel is that it can be stored as a liquid at ambient temperatures and pressures. While its production as a green fuel is still limited, its handling costs are low, reducing the complexity of storage and bunkering infrastructure at ports.

Recent methanol engine orders reflect a carbon-neutral approach from ship owners, since they will be fuelled by carbon-neutral green methanol whenever this is available at scale.

The engine works with the same high efficiency known from our existing conventional fuel engines. Switching between methanol and fuel oil is seamless and thereby supports reliable and continuous operation of the engine.

MAN Energy Solutions Signs Agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NCLH for retrofit of four-stroke MAN 48/60 engine to dual-fuel for diesel/methanol operation

MAN Energy Solutions has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (‘NCLH’ including its subsidiaries and brands). The MoU relates to a project to retrofit a medium-speed MAN 48/60 engine to make it capable of dual-fuel diesel/methanol operation.

The MoU provides for a multi-stage project with the third and final stage involving the completion of field testing and engine handover to NCLH for commercial operation.

Bernd Siebert – Head of Retrofit & Upgrades at MAN PrimeServ – said: “At MAN Energy Solutions, we understand the need to form alliances on the road to decarbonisation. NCLH is a long-time partner with whom we have successfully cooperated on projects in the past and, in the context of this important venture, is the first cruise company that we have chosen to work with.”

He continued: “As a fuel, methanol is quickly becoming an option within the market. It is a clean, efficient and safe future-fuel that offers a path to decarbonisation through significant greenhouse-gas reductions, and is net-zero when produced from renewable energy sources. This memorandum underlines our mutual commitment to reducing shipping’s environmental footprint and has the potential to show the way to net-zero for – not just the cruise segment – but the maritime transport industry as a whole.”
