Carbon-neutral heat pump solutions for district heating

While district heating already has an environmental advantage over individual heating systems, there is a need to reduce its overall carbon footprint. The added attraction of setting the sector free from the price and supply volatility of the fossil fuel markets is leading utilities and decentralized energy suppliers towards large-scale heat pumps powered by renewable electricity. Heat pumps not only produce cost-efficient heat but also help integrate renewable energy into the grid.

MAN technology for district heating and cooling

We scale our heat pumps to the temperature and power needs of our customers. Large-scale MAN heat pumps can supply the heating and cooling needed for local residential and industrial or commercial needs. The heat sink temperature for warm water ranges between 70 °C and 140 °C, suitable for heating water and making steam. The power output ranges from 10 to 90 MWth per heat pump unit. For hot water production, we offer solutions with two different working principles: the transcritical compression cycle (TCC) and the vapor compression cycle (VCC). MAN electro-thermal energy storage (MAN ETES) heat pumps add energy storage and management capability.

MAN transcritical compression cycle (TCC) heat pumps

MAN TCC heat pumps make good use of the special properties that CO2 offers as a refrigerant fluid – it works very efficiently at high and low temperatures as well as being non-flammable. Operating with an optimized transcritical compression cycle (TCC), our heat pumps have a perfect range for most district heating and cooling requirements: from 0°C to 150°C and up to 50 MW (170.61 MMBtu/h) of thermal heat and 30 MW of thermal cold (8,530 metric tons of refrigeration)

MAN vapor compression cycle (VCC) heat pumps

When the district heating network supplies water or steam, we can provide vapor compression cycle (VCC) heat pumps that use ambient or waste heat sources. The heat pump cycle is driven by a well-proven radial geared compressor. For district heating systems based on superheated steam, we can also deliver an additional steam compressor to feed into the network. This can either be separate or integrated with the heat pump compressor. The systems ensure reliable production of hot water (up to 140 °C) and steam (up to 280 °C).

Heat pumps in action: two case studies

The use of MAN heat pumps in two Danish cities demonstrates how renewable energy can be harnessed to heat homes and factory facilities. 

MAN ETES heat pumps replace coal in Esbjerg

We have installed two MAN ETES heat pumps in the Danish port town of Esbjerg to replace its coal-fired heat and power plant. The pumps use energy from the local wind farms to multiply the heat of water from the sea. CO2 serves as an eco-friendly refrigerant – instead of being emitted as a greenhouse gas. The new heating system should save 100,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Climate-neutral district heating in Aalborg with three MAN heat pumps

The Danish city of Aalborg is set to reduce CO2 emissions by 160,000 metric tons annually with the installation of three MAN heat pumps. With a total heat output of 132MW, the new seawater heatpump plant in Aalborg will be one of the largest of its kind in the world. Using renewable electricity produced by the utility plant operator Aalborg Forsyning, the heat pumps will raise the seawater’s temperature from a range of 1-15°C up to 98°C.
