In recent years, regulations have tightened around sulphur emissions with the introduction of SECA zones and the 2020 sulphur cap. All engines today, new or old, must comply with strict emissions limits or risk severe penalties.
However, prolonged operation on low sulphur fuels can have an adverse effect on the tribology of your piston rings and cylinder liners, which can lead to a higher risk of micro-seizures and scuffing. This can result in serious damage that can be costly and time-consuming to repair.
MAN cermet-coated piston rings provide the best possible protection for your cylinder liners, even following prolonged operation on low sulphur fuels. Our three-ring pack also helps to maximize combustion performance and minimize emissions.

Cermet-coated piston rings
MAN cermet-coated piston rings provide the most effective protection against scuffing and seizures, even following prolonged operation on low sulphur fuels (ULSFO and VLSFO). Cermet is a composite coating material, which is partly ceramic and partly metallic. The two components combine into a material with high elastic durability and high-temperature and seizure resistance. Cermet-coated rings are also designed to work reliably even after an incident with momentary oil film breakdown, provided the oil film is subsequently restored, which ensures that the engine can continue in normal operation until the next planned overhaul.

Alu-coated piston rings
Alucoat is a thin running-in layer that smoothens the initial running of the piston rings in the cylinder liners. It has a yellow appearance and is applied to all rings, even those with cermet coating.
Alucoat is normally worn off during the first few months, but in some cases already after approximately 1000 running hours. Once it has worn off, the underlying cast iron will be visible.
