MAN hermetically sealed compressors

Environmental regulations and carbon taxes are driving demand for a clean and efficient class of compressors: oil-free hermetically sealed centrifugal compressors with integrated high-speed motors – like the MAN HOFIM® and MAN MOPICO®. Designed for zero emissions, low maintenance, and to allow unmanned operation, they are being chosen for demanding gas applications and for mega heat pumps for district heating.

  • Low environmental impact

    The hermetically sealed design and the elimination of several auxiliary systems result in an environmentally-neutral, emission-free system. Together with the low noise levels, small footprint and low weight, these compressors provide the highest operating flexibility for the most demanding requirements.

  • Precise control and high efficiency

    Since the late 1990s, HOFIM® and MOPICO® compressors have consistently proven their robustness in challenging gas transport and storage applications. Their high efficiency and broad operating range make them particularly well-suited for applications where it’s critical to minimize energy consumption and maximize operational flexibility in order to achieve low operating costs. Examples include mega heat pumps, subsea applications and unmanned operations.

  • Versatile product platform

    MAN Energy Solutions has engineered the HOFIM® and MOPICO® compressors for a wide range of applications. These compressors combine maximum flexibility with unmatched reliability, making them ideal for gas transportation, gas storage, mega heat pumps, and hydrogen compression. Their robust, oil-free design ensures minimal maintenance requirements while delivering outstanding performance across a wide range of operating conditions.

  • Remote control

    MAN Energy Solutions leads the way in unmanned operation and monitoring of hermetically sealed compressors. In 2015, we installed the world’s first remotely operated subsea gas-compression modules at the Åsgard field, 300 meters below sea level. Today, they are still operating at 100% availability.

MAN MOPICO®

The MAN MOPICO® (motor-driven pipeline compressor) is an integrated, hermetically sealed system comprised of a motor-compressor unit, a variable-frequency drive, and unit control systems. Originally designed for gas pipeline applications, it is perfectly suited for high volume flow applications. It is known for reliability and efficiency, coping well with rapid start-ups and changing load demands, as well as staying pressurized without blowing off in standby mode. The MAN MOPICO® functions without emissions, can be operated and monitored remotely (and even unmanned), and is easy to integrate with existing infrastructure. Maintenance intervals are long, ensuring high availability. To increase pressure, more than one MAN MOPICO® can be operated in parallel.

MAN HOFIM®

The MAN HOFIM® (high-speed oil-free integrated motor compressor) is tailored to meet a range of different demands, including subsea gas operations, unmanned topside operations, mega heat pumps and also for blended hydrogen transport and storage. It is a fully electrical system with a high-speed motor driving a multi-stage centrifugal compressor. Hermetically sealed and fully encapsulated, the HOFIM® is clean, compact and quiet, and it ensures the highest levels of safety. MAN Energy Solutions has eliminated components such as dry gas seals, the lube oil system and gearbox, resulting in minimal maintenance requirements. The compressor’s modular concept facilitates simple system integration, making it an efficient and reliable choice for complex applications. MAN HOFIM® compressors are suited to various hydrogen applications for which demand is growing due to decarbonization efforts.

MAN HOFIM®: Esbjerg

In 2023 MAN Energy Solutions started installing two mega heat pumps using HOFIM® compressors in a new district heating plant in the Danish city of Esbjerg. With an overall heating capacity of 50 MW, the plant will supply around 100,000 inhabitants with up to 235,000 MWh of heat annually. The plant uses renewable power from nearby wind farms and heat is generated using seawater as the heat source, guaranteeing an emission-free replacement of the coal-fired power plant.

MAN MOPICO®: TSO Elering AS

The Estonian gas transmission operator Elering AS ordered two MOPICO® compressor systems for gas transport to develop an integrated energy market in the Baltic region. The compressor systems were installed in the Estonian towns of Paldiski and Puiatu which are 200 kilometers apart. The compressors are necessary to increase the pipeline flow and maintain pressure over the length of the pipeline.
